Low-E Glass Curtain Wall

2022-04-20
Today, glass curtain wall is aesthetically slick, modern and desirable for many architects. It is used primarily for commercial buildings, and some unique residential projects. In practical applications, most of curtain walls generally tend to use glass glazing safely in large, uninterrupted areas of a building, creating consistent, attractive facades. In the current market, there are a variety of glass glazing available, which allows architects and designers to control every aspect of aesthetics and performance, including thermal and solar control, sound and security, as well as colour, light and glare. Emissivity is an indicator of the amount of long-wave infra-red radiation which a surface (such as the facade of a building) will emit to its surroundings. The term ‘low-E glass curtain wall’ is used to describe glass curtain wall that has a coating added to one or more of its surfaces to reduce its emissivity. For example, curtain glass windows tend to cause a ‘greenhouse effect’ for the building, where solar radiation enters a space, and heats it up, but the resulting long-wave infra-red radiation emitted by the hot internal surfaces is unable to escape. Low-E glass curtain wall can be used to reduce the effective emissivity of the surface of glass facades so that it reflects, rather than absorbs, a higher proportion of long-wave infra-red radiation in applications. In cooler conditions, long-wave infra-red radiation that builds up inside a curtain wall building is reflected by the glass back into the space, rather than being absorbed by the glass and then partially re-radiated to the outside, whichn reduces heat loss as well as the need for artificial heating. In hotter conditions, Low-E glass curtain wall can make the long-wave infra-red radiation outside the building reflected back out of the building, rather than being absorbed by the glass and then partially re-radiated to the inside, which reduces the heat build-up inside the building as well as the need for cooling. Besides, low-e coating might be used in conjunction with solar-control glass panels so as to reduce the amount of short-wave solar radiation entering the building.
